Is IVF Effective In PCOS?

PCOS has become an increasingly common condition, with 1 in every 10 women being diagnosed with PCOS. Women of all age groups are getting diagnosed with PCOS, and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can very well be considered an epidemic in the Gynecological world. More and more girls and women are acquiring PCOS and PCOD, affecting their hormones, mood, health and fertility.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal disorder that causes women to have enlarged ovaries with small cysts, known as polycystic ovaries.

The symptoms of PCOS are –

· Menstrual irregularities including delayed periods, irregular periods, scanty periods, early periods, or prolonged periods.

·  Weight gain or difficulty in losing weight.

·  Hormonal excess showing up in male pattern: Acne, increased body hair, and hair loss on the scalp.

PCOS is confirmed if a person has a minimum of two of these signs and symptoms – Irregular Periods, Excess male hormones, and polycystic ovary being seen on an ultrasound. If you have signs of PCOS does not mean you have PCOS, since the signs of PCOS are common to other conditions. If you think you are having signs of pcos or pcos ovulation problems, you must consult with your gynecologist and get pcod problem treatment and PCOS treatment, whatever the doctor feels is required.

The PCOS causes are not fully understood but doctors think that genetics and lifestyle disorders have a pivotal role in development of PCOS or PCOD. The PCOS causes can range from genetics, sedentary lifestyle, wrong diet, stress, and lack of sleep. PCOS causes can be because of our lifestyle choices such as excessive fast food, lack of physical exercise, and sedentary habits.

Since PCOD and PCOS are affected by poor lifestyle choies, they can be managed by losing weight, improving the lifestyle, eating a good diet, and getting some exercise. Most doctors recommend weight loss by regular exercise along with eating a balanced diet which ensures that extra weight is reduced. In some cases, medications may be necessary in order to manage PCOS.

Since PCOS affects the menstrual cycle, PCOS can have an impact on a woman’s fertility. Woman with Ovulation often experience anovulation or lack of ovulation. Since an ovum isn’t released in the menstrual cycle, a person can have problems conceiving without treatment. It is due to this reason that PCOS is a common cause of treatable infertility.

PCOS and Infertility

PCOS is a common cause of infertility in women. The treatment options include managing PCOS with Lifestyle changes, diet modification, exercises, and adequate sleep. Oral ovulation-inducing drugs may be prescribed in order to stimulate ovulation. If Oral Ovulation-inducing drugs do not work, injectable hormones would be utilized to improve the maturation of eggs. Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin is also injected to release the matured ovum. This can be timed with sexual intercourse to increase conception chances.

If Drugs and Medications do not help with conception in a patient having PCOS, IVF treatment may be recommended.

PCOS and IVF

A lot of people have the question is IVF effective in PCOS. Since PCOS affects fertility, some people who haven’t benefited from lifestyle disorders and medications, fertility treatment is required. IVF treatment for PCOS is often a treatment that that might help people conceive. IVF treatment for PCOS should be taken by a doctor who is experienced and has provided IVF treatment for PCOS to many other patients.

IVF is not required for all PCOS patients trying to conceive. Requirement of IVF depends upon the following –

·         Age of the person

·         Condition of the fallopian tubes

·         Quality of partner’s sperm

If a younger person with good fertility parameters is facing PCOS related infertility, ovulation induction medications might be given preference. However, if the person is older, with blocked fallopian tubes and the quality of the sperm is not ideal, than going for IVF earlier is recommended to enhance the success rates.

IVF Treatment for PCOS

The IVF treatment procedure for PCOS is similar to that of people without PCOS. There is Consulations, egg stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilization, embryo transfer, and pregnancy test.

However, the IVF treatment for PCOS needs to be performed by highly skilled and trained doctors. The reason for this is that people with PCOS  are prone to certain complications such as OHSS, which is ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome, an exaggerated response to the fertility treatment hormones. This happens since multiple follicles in PCOS results in an exaggerated response. It is due to this reason that IVF Doctor should  have a prior experience with IVF treatment for PCOS so that they can minimize the risk of OHSS and be able to provide a safe IVF treatment.

OHSS can be prevented with the help of adjusting medications, adding medications, pausing medication before resuming when it is safer, and opting for a frozen embryo transfer. Frozen embryo transfer allows the ovaries to rest so that they aren’t overstimulated due to the embryo transfer. For frozen embryo transfer, the embryo is harvested and frozen, and is introduced into the uterus in a different menstrual cycle.
