The uterus is well-defined by an inner covering called the endometrium or the uterine lining. The muscular layer called the myometrium lies beneath the endometrium. During regular menstruation, the uterine lining thickens, sheds and bleeds.  Adenomyosis of the uterus is when the endometrium grows invading the myometrium of the uterus. When the uterine lining bleeds during menstruations, the endometrium within the muscles too breakdown; rupturing the muscular wall. Thus, adenomyosis is characterized by heavy bleeding, severe muscle cramps, and an enlarged uterus.  Studies suggest that women in their reproductive age, women who have had a previous uterus surgery or c-section, can develop adenomyosis symptoms .
