Polycystic ovaries: What are the symptoms?

Polycystic ovaries are one of the most common hormonal disorderscharacterized by excess androgens in women. Ovaries typically produce one eggduring one menstrual cycle. In women with polycystic ovary syndrome/disorder

(PCOS/ PCOD), the ovaries develop small aggregates of fluid filled sacs on
their surface that fail to produce even one egg in a menstrual cycle.
PCOS causes are primarily attributed to the increase inandrogen levels. Androgen is a male hormone present in both men and women. Inwomen, the androgens produced are timely converted into estrogen. However, in
women with polycystic ovary conditions, the androgens do not get converted and
thus an increase of androgen levels are observed. The other causes are genetic
inheritance, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and inflammation that
induce the production of androgens in the body.
The main signs of PCOS include irregular periods/ ovulation. The endometrial liningthickens more than usual due to irregular PCOS ovulation and so, heavy menstrual flow is seen in women withpolycystic ovaries. Frequent headaches, mood swings, disturbed sleep, unwantedhair growth (hirsutism), acne, obesity, scalp hair thinning are also observed
because of elevated androgen levels in PCOS.
When a womanobserves the above indications, consulting the best gynecologist is necessaryto manage the symptoms of PCOS. The doctor will initially diagnose with blood
analysis to check the levels of hormones and also conduct an ultrasound to
review the status of the ovaries and uterus.
It isimportant to get a timely diagnosis of this condition as PCOS is associatedwith certain complications such as metabolic disorders (diabetes, blood
pressure, heart problems, etc), endometrial cancer, gestational diabetes,
miscarriage and sometimes premature delivery as well.
PCOD problem treatment is all about managing the symptoms.
● Hormonal therapy for PCOS can improve thelevels of estrogen reducing excessive menstrual flow and other associatedcomplications.
● Having a diet with low carbohydrates/sugarswill help avoid conditions such as insulin resistance, high blood pressure andensure maintenance of health weight.
● Regular exercise and adequate sleep of 7-9hrsis essential to maintain the hormone levels.
