What is the cost of hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic tool as well as a treatment procedure that involves use of a long, thin tube with a light source and a camera on one end called a hysteroscope. The hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the cervix allowing the doctor to view the inside of the uterus and cervix.


To detect the reason for excessive bleeding, irregular menstruation, your doctor may conduct a diagnostic hysteroscopy. Sometimes, hysteroscopy is performed to confirm the results of other diagnostic procedures like Hysterosalpingography; a form of X-ray done to determine the status of the fallopian tubules and the uterus. Operational hysteroscopy helps improve fertility as it can treat various conditions of the uterus and cervix such as 

  • Uterine fibroids: The non-cancerous growth such as fibroids and polyps are diagnosed and treated with hysteroscopy. 

  • Septate uterus: Hysteroscopy can be used to correct a septate uterus; congenital condition characterized by a deformity of the uterus that can hamper a healthy pregnancy.

  • Pelvic adhesions: The scar tissues or pelvic adhesions may cause the internal organs including the uterus, ovaries to stick to one another. This can be removed using a hysteroscopy. 

  • Abnormal bleeding: Heavy periods, abnormal bleeding between the periods, bleeding seen after menopause, can be reduced and treated using endometrial ablation. Here, hysteroscopy is used to destroy the piled up uterine lining. 


The procedure of hysteroscopy is done with the help of a sedative after which the doctor will widen the cervix to insert the hysteroscope. Carbon dioxide gas is passed through initially to clear the blood and mucus. Later, the necessary tools are inserted to carry out the required diagnostic or treatment procedure. 


Hysteroscopy can be combined with laparoscopy to treat certain conditions and sometimes is done before procedures such as dilation and curettage. 


Since hysteroscopy needs no major incisions and is a minimally invasive procedure, it takes very little time to recover and a very short stay at the hospital post hysteroscopy.
