Fallopian tubes are thin structures in the female’s reproductive tract that connect the ovaries to the uterus. These tubes have multiple roles – they help move the released egg towards the uterus and are also the place in the reproductive tract where the egg and the sperm meet to fertilise. The sperm has to travel up the vagina, into the uterus, and towards the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. Since the egg is released from the ovaries and has to travel through the fallopian tubes towards the uterus and the sperm moves up through the uterus towards the fallopian tube, a blocked fallopian tube can prevent the egg from fertilizing with the sperm. If one fallopian tube is blocked, fertilization might still happen when the ovum is released from the ovary connected to the fallopian tube that is not blocked, but if both fallopian tubes are blocked then the egg wouldn’t be able to fertilize with the sperm.

Blocked Fallopian Tubes Causes 

Blocked fallopian tubes can be caused due to a number of reasons. Some of the causes of the blocked fallopian tubes are – 

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease – Pelvic Inflammatory diseases can cause Hydrosalpinx or scarring of the fallopian tubes. 
  • Endometriosis – In Endometriosis the endometrium starts growing outside the uterus and if it starts to grow in the fallopian tubes it can cause blocked fallopian tubes. Endometrial tissue growing on the outside of other organs can also cause adhesions leading to blocked fallopian tubes. 
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) – Sexually Transmitted Infections such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause blocked fallopian tubes. 
  • Past Ectopic Pregnancy – An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that starts to grow and develop outside of the uterus. If the past ectopic pregnancy started to grow and develop in a fallopian tube it can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes. 
  • Fibroids – Fibroids can cause blocked fallopian tubes, and this commonly happens in the proximal part where the fallopian tubes attach to the uterus. 
  • Past Abdominal Surgery – Past Abdominal surgery, especially if done on the fallopian tubes can lead to adhesion formation which causes blocked fallopian tubes. 

As you can see, the causes of blocked fallopian tubes are varied. It is important to ensure that you are practicing sexual hygiene to prevent STIs and consult a gynecologist if you experience any pelvic pain, abdominal pain, or menstrual cycle related symptoms to ensure any reproductive health conditions can be treated so that it doesn’t cause blocked fallopian tubes. 

Blocked Fallopian Tubes Diagnosis and Treatment 

Blocked Fallopian tubes are usually detected on a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) which is a type of X-ray. During an HSG, a dye is injected into the uterus which then moves towards the ovaries through the fallopian tube. 

A laparoscopy may be recommended to see if the fallopian tubes are blocked. In a laparoscopy a small incision is made to see the reproductive tract with high precision apparatus. If there is a blocked fallopian tube, laparoscopic surgery would be performed. 

If a surgeon feels that surgery might be required, they would recommend that either with the laparoscopy or when the doctor thinks it is required. 

Sometimes small blockages in the fallopian tubes are removed after the HSG. 

If a doctor feels that IVF is a better option than surgically operating on the fallopian tubes, an IVF treatment might be recommended where the egg retrieval is performed from the ovaries and the sperm is taken from the male, fertilised in a lab, and then placed into the woman’s uterus. This treatment does not require the egg and the sperm to fertilise in the fallopian tubes, as the embryo is directly placed into the uterus after in-vitro fertilisation that happens outside the female reproductive tract.
