What are the Risks and Side effects of IVF?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the widely accepted assisted reproductive procedures. The ray of hope it has brought into the lives of many couples struggling with infertility and conception is not less than a miracle. We all know that every scientific and medical procedure is not a hundred percent guaranteed and carries at least a small aorta of uncertainty and risk. However, assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) has constantly tried to overcome every uncertainty and side-effect to provide better outcomes.

Some of the risks and side-effects of IVF and ways to overcome them are:

  • Ovarian Stimulation side-effect: Ovarian stimulation is the first step of IVF which requires hormonal interventions to induce ovaries to produce more mature eggs. The side effects here are caused due to hormonal side-effects such as inflammation of ovaries, pain, mood swings, bloating, and many more. These side-effects are generally mild to moderate and recede in a few days.

  • IVF medication side-effects:

Hormonal treatments in IVF include administration of estrogen and progesterone that are essential to maintain the endometrium for the IVF pregnancy. The estrogen/ Estrace side-effects of IVF include vomiting, bloating, pain in the breasts, weight gain, etc.

Progesterone can be given via injections or vaginal capsules. Pain and swelling in the injected region, nausea, cramps, mood swings are some of the side effects of injectable progesterone. Progesterone side-effects of IVF vaginal capsules are vaginal itching or burning. These side-effects caused due to hormones subside with their lowered effect.

  • Side-effects of egg retrieval stage: Egg retrieval is an IVF stage where the eggs are retrieved from the mature follicles through a small surgical procedure. Egg retrieval side-effects include mild abdominal pain. On very rare occasions, infections or injury to the adjacent organs/tissues/blood vessels can occur. However, these side effects can be treated with medications including antibiotics and pain relievers.

  • IVF side-effects on the baby: IVF risks include the risk of conceiving multiples. Transfer to more than one embryo to improve pregnancy chances can lead to this condition. However, pre-implantation genetic screening/diagnosis (PGD-S/D) can help select one viable embryo without our chromosomal/genetic defects and transfer of one embryo can help address multiple IVF pregnancies.

Preterm delivery in an IVF pregnancy is rare. But, it is observed that IVF babies are born with low weight at birth. The use of frozen embryos to fresh embryos for transfer can reduce this side-effect as well.
